A few rules to care your dress shirt

August 29, 2009 By: admin Category: dress fashion

The first is laundering your dress shirts. Dry cleaning uses extremely harsh chemicals that degrades the cotton faster than a regular wash. Its best to ask your Dry cleaner to launder your shirts. If you wash them yourself, use a mild cycle and go easy on the detergent.

Secondly, light to no Starch. Starch flattens and hardens the fibers of cotton causing them to be brittle. You will see fibers break causing pilings and “fuzzyness” much earlier because of starch.

At last, watch how you press. Pressing a shirt is an art form all to its self and learning to press it right can have you looking sharp all day. The best option is to find a great cleaner to press them for you. With that said look for tell tale signs of bad quality press work, such as indentations at seams, broken buttons, shiny collars and creases on the cuffs.

Dress shirt style for man

A dress shirt worn properly would be one that has a good fit, proper collar style, sleeve length and cuff size. Men in suits should remember that a good look entail not just a stylish accessory or a tailored suit, but more importantly, a well-fitted dress shirt. Below are some rules on how to properly wear a dress shirt.

First, consider the collar size. Close the top button of the shirt and insert two fingers into the space between the neck and the collar.

Second, there should be no extra fabric showing once the shirt is tucked in. It should fit snugly around the torso and not appear too full around the waist or it will be too tight that it is already difficult to move.

Third, the length of the sleeve should end past the wrist bone, or the space between the thumb and the wrist. The right length of the shirt, on one hand, can be measured by tucking the shirt in and raising the arms. The shirt should remain tucked in the pants once you raise your hand. Ideally, the length should reach the crotch so it won’t pull from the pants when seated.

And lastly, the shirt must look formal and neat. It should be wrinkle free and properly ironed. You should be able to combine stiffness and smoothness. Follow the washing instructions so your dress shirt will last a long time. Make sure that buttons are present and do not hang loose. Maintain the shape by hanging them in wooden hangers. An undershirt is not really necessary but if you wish to wear one, make sure that it is the same color as the dress shirt.

Take heed of the mentioned tips and you’ll never wear an ill-fitting shirt again.

How to choose a dress shirt

Most people do not know that there are varying degrees of spread and choosing the right one can help accentuate your face and give a slimming effect. If you have a pointy or heart shaped face, a classic British cut away spread will work best. This is characterized by its almost horizontal collar and goes well with the full Windsor knot. If your face is on the rounder side choose a modified spread. Not quite as wide spread as the cut away version, this collar will be better when paired with the half Windsor knot.
Choose the right collar size. Make sure that the collar is proportionate to the rest of your clothes. If you like to wear a traditional suit with wide lapels and wear a standard tie opt for a collar with 3″ points to balance out the look. If its a MOD look you are going after, pair your slim lapels and 1.5″ ties with the appropriate 2″ point collar.
